Letter to the Editor
Readers respond to ‘hateful’ letter about photo

In response to the open-mindedness of Chris Kovalchick: Wow. I'll start with "How about publishing pictures and stories about real people that actually matter for a change?" I don't know about everyone else, but that quote gives me the impression that you don't consider those with alternative sexual preferences to be real or of any importance.

It's the 21st century, you attend a public university and you live in a country founded on freedom -- freedom for everyone, regardless of preferences -- not just freedom for straight, conservative men.

It's time you (and everyone else like you) wake up and realize that other people do make different choices, and that they are allowed to. Your comment that "There are plenty of individuals and groups at Penn State who are good, honest people, striving every day to make a positive difference..." makes my brain hurt. You don't consider homosexuals good people, yet you think you and your right-wing buddies are decent human beings?

I, coincidentally, know the "queer" from IUP. Guess what? He is an honest and good person. His job is helping people, literally -- not belittling them for their sexual preferences. He and I don't agree on everything, but, like most people (or "real" people), I don't feel offended because of his choices. Quite frankly, they are his choices, not mine, and it's his right to make them.

Learn to accept differences in people or sit down and shut up.
