Letter to the Editor
Readers respond to ‘hateful’ letter about photo

I do not agree with Chris Kovalchick's letter, yet I cannot ignore the irony in the 130 responses (or at least in most of them). Most of the people who wrote to the Collegian attacked a person of a different mindset from their own, just as Mr. Kovalchick did. Did you not realize when you were writing your letter that you too were being hateful toward a group of people? Bigots, as much as anyone else, are entitled to opinions. By attacking Mr. Kovalchick you have become exactly what you seek to eliminate: an intolerant person.

You do not agree with his views, just like he does not agree with yours. In responding, most of you became exactly what you were writing about: hateful. In striving to create "equality" many groups now criticize people who don't share the same goals. The struggle for equality will last forever unless we can agree to disagree. We are all intolerant of someone or something.

By human nature, even the most benevolent person wants what is good for himself or herself. We are all different; we all think we know what is best and what is right; we all have distinct strengths and weaknesses. It is possible to stop the cycle of hate, but it is not possible or natural to create uniformity or "equality."

For everyone who responded to Mr. Kovalchick's letter, I ask you to read your own letter, yet replace the word bigot with homosexual or a name for any other group, especial one to which you belong. Now what do you think?
