Letter to the Editor
Readers respond to ‘hateful’ letter about photo

It is amazing to me that after all the problems this campus has had in the past with hate speech, I can open up my Collegian and read a letter that blatantly denounces an entire population of individuals on this campus as "disgusting and pathetic," as was stated in "Gay public affection offensive to readers" in Thursday's issue.

I didn't exactly appreciate seeing public displays of affection of ANY sort on the front page of the Collegian, but expressing one's disapproval of the picture by calling the individuals "queers"and implying that they are not real people and don't actually matter; well, that's where one goes from intolerant to just plain ignorant. As a minority on this campus, I truly empathize with the hostility and negativity that members of the LGBT community experience, and I think it is imperative that Penn State students stop harboring so much hatred and start embracing the different cultures that make this campus so unique.

As a heterosexual, my deepest apologies go out to the LGBT community for this horrible display of intolerance, and I hope it is known that this sentiment does not represent the feelings of the entire heterosexual community on this campus.
