Police: No major incidents at Thon
THON 2005

Collegian Staff Writer

Though far from quiet, the scene at this year's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon was relatively calm for law enforcement officials, Penn State University Police said.

Assistant Supervisor Brian Bittner said police handled only a few minor alcohol-related incidents Friday and Saturday nights.

Officers were stationed inside and outside of Rec Hall at all times, but there were no other criminal incidents, he said.

"There was nothing big, just usual stuff," Bittner said. "This year was quiet for us actually."

Police are unsure of why this year's Thon was particularly uneventful, Bittner said.

"You see trends in the way people drink and the way people act here," he said.

Bittner added that cold weather and intense security might have played a role in keeping disruptive individuals away from Thon.

"Maybe the word's actually spreading now that we do patrol Thon heavily," he said.

The weekend also went smoothly from the perspective of Thon officials, said Carrie Konosky, Thon public relations overall.

"We haven't had any major problems," she said.

Intoxicated people were intercepted by security before causing a disturbance, Konosky said.

"Everything was handled before anything ever became a problem," she said.

Every year police must shut the doors to avoid crowd control issues, Bittner said.

"We always have a large crowd," he said. "People get a little upset."

Rec Hall's doors were closed to the public at noon yesterday and the floors were packed to capacity by 3 p.m., Konosky said.

For the eighth year, the Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) offered 24-hour service to bus Thon patrons to and from the event.

Despite the longer hours, drivers did not report any major incidents during the weekend, CATA Operations Supervisor James Ewing said.

"From what I understand, it went pretty smooth," Ewing said.

Although officers stationed at Rec Hall handled only a small number of calls, officers patrolling other parts of campus had a normal, busy weekend, Bittner said.

"We had a busy weekend outside of Rec Hall," he said.

Police issued three citations for driving under the influence over the weekend, though that number is not unusual, Bittner said.

"We usually get a few [each] weekend," he said.
