NEWS

Although President George W. Bush's first choice for director of national intelligence has an impressive array of credentials, students were concerned about the broad, undefined scope of the power vested in the position.

Members of Pennsylvania's House Appropriations Committee questioned Sallie Mae's vice president yesterday about the company's $1 billion proposal to control the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency's (PHEAA) loan portfolio.

Mats were laid. Speakers were hung. Banners proudly displayed the Thon logo.

While thousands gather in Rec Hall to kickoff the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, police are looking forward to a quiet Friday and Saturday night.

This weekend, the Touch of Africa wants to enlighten more than 500 students about African culture through cuisine, dance, poetry, skits and a live band.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, Penn State has competed with other universities worldwide to attract international students due to increased security concerns.

President George W. Bush has proposed to increase the death gratuity and life insurance coverage for families of troops killed in designated combat zones, which could total $500,000 in some cases.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler Dave Batista sauntered into the Carnegie Building yesterday afternoon with his 6-foot-5, 317-pound frame wrapped in a blue pinstriped suit.

A lawsuit filed Feb. 4 by Dickinson School of Law Board of Governors members G. Thomas Miller, Leslie Anne Miller and Thomas Monteverde will be heard today, and could alter future relations between Penn State and the law school.

Months of intense preparation will be put into action when the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon kicks off at 7 tonight in Rec Hall.

Things went pretty well for former Undergraduate Student Government president Ian Rosenberger on the first episode of Survivor: Palau, which aired on CBS last night.

Last night, Allies held a press conference in response to a letter published in the opinion section of yesterday's Daily Collegian.

News in Brief

SPORTS

At one point or another, every team has to deal with injuries. Most of the time that comes toward the latter part of the season, after a team has already established some continuity. For the Penn State men's lacrosse team, injuries have not even allowed it the luxury of finding out what kind of team it can be.

As the Penn State men's volleyball team treks to Newark, N.J., this weekend for the Golden Dome Classic, its offensive attack will feature a smorgasbord of weapons. Such was not always the case for the No. 5 Nittany Lions, who used to rely quite heavily upon their middles, Keith Kowal and Nate Meerstein, to rack up the points.

At the beginning of the season, Penn State wrestling captains Eric Bradley, Adam Smith and Josh Walker talked about how the team may need to rest up toward the end of the dual meet season to prepare for the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. This time last year, Smith and Bradley were worn down, and both exited earlier than they liked in the NCAA Tournament.

The 14th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team will be going national this weekend without even leaving the comfort of State College.

In considering the writing of the record book, the members of Penn State's 200-yard medley relay team acted as editors to their own work.

It only counts for a single point in the final score, but doubles points in any college tennis match can be huge.

A tough schedule is nothing new for the Penn State softball team. Last season the Nittany Lions (0-0) opened their season against the best softball schools in the nation.

Spring break is coming two weeks early for five members of the Penn State women's golf team as they head to Dorado, Puerto Rico, to compete in the Puerto Rico Lady Classic from Feb. 20-23.

Even though it was way back when his Afro was in full effect, Joe Battista can still vividly remember his senior day as an Icer.

After losing 15 of its last 17 games, saying that the Penn State men basketball team is frustrated would be the understatement of the season.

The Penn State baseball team's streak of mediocrity may finally be coming to an end -- but it's still going to have to find its identity first.

Penn State alumni gathered yesterday afternoon at Beaver Stadium's media room for a panel discussion to promote the College of Communications' Center for Sports Journalism.

The Penn State ACHA Division I Icers have already clinched the No. 2 seed in the national championship tournament, but they're still playing for something else.

Before each of their last few home contests, a different member of the Lady Lions has asked the crowd to stand until Penn State scored its first bucket in a taped message played on the scoreboard.

Good Charlotte would be proud. Proud of the men's gymnastics team that is, for holding on. The team suffered a minor setback last weekend falling to Illinois by less than half a point, but hopes to come back strong against Michigan this weekend.

There won't be any grand ceremony, torch carrying or Celine Dion singing at this Olympic competition.

OPINIONS

Thon weekend kicks off; we all should remember that it's still for the kids

My Opinion: Jen Winberry

How do you think Ian Rosenberger will fare on 'Survivor'?

Letters to the editor
ARTS

Consider me a (slightly) changed man.

Golly, can it be? Something's emerged from Texas that doesn't suck, that actually deserves a high approval rating?

Ramón just wants to die.

The Documentary is good. You can dance to it, bop to it, whatever.

My appreciation for country music was non-existent until I started to come home to it blasting from my new roommate's laptop a couple of years ago.

Back in 1996, when ska-punk bands were snatching up record deals and stealing radio airplay, Orange County's Goldfinger became the most successful of the bunch with its self-titled debut album, which fused fast punk with reggae and even a touch of metal. That album and its follow-up Hang-ups placed Goldfinger on just about every current pop-punk band's list of influences. After those two albums, however, it seemed as if Goldfinger forgot what it wanted to sound like. The band's last two records, although good, were all over the place musically. On the band's fifth album, Disconnection Notice, Goldfinger successfully pulls off a consistent sounding pop-rock record.

What's the deal with Jerry Seinfeld? Prime-time TV's favorite comedian left the world of Soup Nazis, picky dating and coffee shops in his past and is now back to pursuing his stand-up comedy career. And after viewing his show last night at 7 in Eisenhower Auditorium, I think most would agree: he's still got the touch.

Bar Bleu, 114 S. Garner St., will feature TGIF with Dominick Swentosky. Specials include half-priced happy hour from 6 to 8 p.m. and $4.75 Coors Light pitchers until midnight (237-0374).
