Icers still playing for pride after clinching No. 2 seed
ACHA Hockey

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State ACHA Division I Icers have already clinched the No. 2 seed in the national championship tournament, but they're still playing for something else.

Pride.

Seven Penn State seniors will lace up for their final game at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion this weekend, as the No. 2 Icers (21-6-3) are slated to take on No. 13 Washington & Jefferson (15-11-1) at 9 tonight and 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.

"This is our last dress rehearsal for Nationals," Penn State coach Joe Battista said. "It's the last chance to work out any kinks."

According to Battista, the ACHA determined the seedings prior to the season's end so teams on the bubble could plan accordingly.

Still, forward Kevin Jaeger vowed his team wouldn't take the Presidents lightly -- even if the two-game set wouldn't affect the seedings.

"We're just gonna play two hard games," Jaeger said. "They don't matter as far as standings, but you always want to go in to the national championship on a good note."

Penn State defeated the Presidents, 7-1, back in late October and looks to be just as dominant this time around. The Icers defense put forth a solid effort in that game, as it allowed only 15 shots. And the defense has only gotten better since then.

The only question mark, if any, remains on offense.

"We have to keep attacking the net," Battista said. "We played them earlier this year, and we let them in the game."

Battista explained that many of the Icers' goals came late in the contest, and they weren't able to quickly put away the Presidents.

But if the power play remains as strong as last week, then handing Washington & Jefferson a lopsided defeat shouldn't be too difficult.

The Icers went 5-for-6 against No. 4 Illinois on the power play and should be a force again this weekend -- as long as it continues to stress teamwork and not specific individuals.

"When they move the puck and let the puck do the work, they're awesome," Battista said. "When they try to beat the guys one-on-one and play as individuals, they're ordinary."

And according to Jaeger, the Icers won't be able to settle for ordinary -- because the Presidents will look to exploit any weakness they can find.

"They're a real gritty team," he said. "They have some big guys and they normally give us a run for our money."

Jaeger, a senior, will also look to continue his run at the school's all-time goal-scoring record.

Jaeger is currently four goals away from Lynn Sipe, and it's a distinct possibility that he may reach that record -- or at least come close -- this weekend when he takes on a team that's been allowing an average of nearly six goals per game against teams in the top 16.

"I'm gonna try to put a big nick into it this weekend," he said. "If I can't get it this weekend, then I'm definitely gonna pull it off at nationals."

Although Jaeger obviously wants the record, he said he's still not going to be a "puck hog" and will continue to put the team first.
