PSU ready to face Kansas at home
Women's Tennis

It only counts for a single point in the final score, but doubles points in any college tennis match can be huge.

The Penn State women's tennis team knows it could be the key to its success.

After a disappointing 5-2 loss on Feb. 4 to the University of Pennsylvania, in which the Lions were swept at doubles, the team has been focusing heavily on its doubles play.

"We've been working on doubles every day; it's a big concentration," Penn State head coach Buffy Baker said. "Even though its only one point, it's a big point."

In a seven-point match system, the double point is very important because it's the difference between having to win only half the singles matches as opposed to having to win four out of the six singles matches.

Penn State will be able to see if the work paid off when it takes on Kansas at 5 p.m. today at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center. The Lions will follow that match up with another home match at 11 a.m. Sunday against Yale.

The Lions will be coming into the match against the Jayhawks not knowing what to expect, having never played them before. Yale could pose a larger challenge because, although it is currently unranked, the team was ranked No. 73 as recently as Jan. 11. The Lions will be looking for revenge against the Bulldogs after losing 6-1 last season.

A win against Yale would also bode well for the Lions' NCAA tournament chances. The two teams are in the same region, and non-conference wins in a team's region are particularly appealing to the selection committee.

"We don't know too much about Kansas. They're a completely new team," Baker said. "We played Yale last year, and they've been a strong team the past couple years."

The Lions' matches this weekend are also significant, as they are the team's last home matches before the Big Ten season begins.
