Penn State ready for big stage, bright lights
Women's Gymnastics

Collegian Staff Writer

The 14th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team will be going national this weekend without even leaving the comfort of State College.

The Nittany Lions' competition against George Washington (7-8) at 7 tomorrow night will be broadcasted live on WPSX locally and CSTV on the national level.

CSTV broadcasts to 20 million homes across the United States.

This will be Penn State's second encounter with national television this year, but only its first live event.

January's Super Six Challenge was taped and later aired on ESPN.

"Anytime you get on national television it helps in terms of your exposure and visibility of your program," Penn State coach Steve Shephard said.

"Obviously recruiting is a big plus. The more prospects that see you, the better."

This week's competition is a double dual meet with both the women's and men's teams competing at the same time.

To accommodate the large crowds expected to come out and see both gymnastics squads, the competition will be held in the Bryce Jordan Center instead of Penn State's usual home in Rec Hall. The Jordan Center, with a capacity of more than 15,000, beats the maximum capacity in Rec Hall of 6,846.

The big crowds and the national coverage won't bother the team though, Shephard said.

"We've already had a couple of big meets," he said. "We've had experience dealing with this exposure. We will be fine."

The Lions, who carry a three-game winning streak into tomorrow's competition, are looking forward to their big meet and are ready to shine when the spotlight is on them.

"It's going to be awesome," freshman Lindsay Borkan said. "Just coming off a great meet, we are totally pumped. We gained our confidence back and were just ready to go kick some butt again this weekend. It will be a great night and I think we will do really well."

The Lions will try to perform as they did last weekend in West Virginia where they recorded a score of 196.650, their highest of the season.

Their victory against West Virginia and Ball State has done a great deal to boost their confidence and has them eager to put on a repeat performance this week.

"We definitely feel more confident," Borkan said, "especially after the score we got last weekend. We had so much fun and were so relaxed and that built our confidence up so well. We're going to do the same thing this weekend and hopefully have just as much fun and do even better."

This year Penn State and George Washington have faced three common opponents.

The Lions are 3-0 against Cornell, Iowa and Ball State, while George Washington is 2-1 after tallying a loss against Iowa.
