Nittany Lions slam out fifth straight win

Collegian Staff Writer

After losing a long rally, during which Bucknell's Ira Reibeisen had his opponent all over the court, he burst out, "Who is this?!"

This is Mark Barry -- the No. 1 singles player for the No. 61 Penn State men's tennis team (8-1), and he has yet to lose this spring (5-0 singles, 5-0 doubles).

Barry clinched a 7-0 sweep for the Nittany Lions last night against the Bucknell Bison (0-2) with his 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Reibeisen.

During the match, Barry had his opponent frustrated early, which made Reibeisen rely more on his big serve and trying to hit harder shots, rather than just playing out the match.

"I just try to stay with my game -- by playing consistent," Barry said.

The other Penn State players kept pace with Barry, once again not allowing a third set to their overmatched opponent.

Penn State came out strong after barely sweeping the doubles point, with sophomore Ryan Berger beating Nick Denefrio impressively 6-1, 6-1. The quick win put the Lions up 2-0 in the match and also put Berger at 5-0 on the season at his No. 3 singles spot.

Junior Malcolm Scatliffe added the next point for the Lions, with a great 6-0, 6-2 effort against Asher Salam at No. 2 singles. The match was probably Scatliffe's best of the season so far after his breakthrough season at No. 1 singles last year.

Mark Barry easily won his match against Bucknell.

"Scatliffe raised his game," Penn State coach Jan Bortner said. "He played much better singles tonight -- Malcolm's really starting to get his game going."

While Scatliffe's game is getting in gear and Barry's playing consistently, along with the rest of the team's play at singles, the doubles remain the story of the year for the young squad.

Even after Barry and Scatliffe's dominating 8-2 win against Denefrio and Salam, the double's point was very much in doubt before the Lions fought off Bucknell's aggressive play to sweep all three matches.

At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Michael James and Chris Sherman battled back from being down 1-4 to wrap up the point, beating Gerald DiChiara and Garret Neff 8-6.

To complete the sweep, Berger and Bradley Hunter had a tough time pulling away from Matt Pikus and Reibeisen, but managed to avoid a tie break, winning 9-7.

"We rebounded in singles, but you have to hand it to Bucknell -- they came after us in doubles," Bortner said, later adding: "Right now all three [doubles] teams have to start playing at a higher level."
