Tow truck comments offend working class
Melinda Reidenbach took a crack at joining the ever-esteemed ranks of Collegian opinion writers ("Everyone needs to work together to end towing plague," Feb. 16). Reidenbach attempted to suggest the cause of her parking problems is the tow truck drivers that carry out the not-so-favorable sanctions against illegal parking. Ms. Reidenbach, your argument is misguided and unfair. Let me begin by saying that I fully support your core argument that the parking situation in this town is a fiasco. I too pay a pretty penny to park my car because my rent does not include a parking spot. You error, however, in attacking the tow truck drivers. First, you suggest that the drivers should engage in selective enforcement. This would undermine the validity of their job. Second, you ridicule them for the zeal in which they supposedly "hunt" for the next car to tow. They are simply doing their job and should be commended for doing it. Few Americans can say they do their jobs with the same enthusiasm. You continue to scorn the drivers based on several aesthetic issues and even go so far as to insult the graphics on their trucks. Are we still in the third grade? Furthermore, the Jenna Jameson comment and the reference to the low pay afforded tow truck drivers were below the belt. Finally, with a family history rooted in blue-collar work, I take personal offense to someone like you, Ms. Reidenbach, taking shots at the working class from behind a college newsroom desk.
