True purpose of Thon is still helping kids
Apparently The Daily Collegian has taken a break from its apparent never-ending crusade against Undergraduate Student Government (USG) and the greek community. Normally, I really don't care when you criticize because I think most people realize that the Collegian is a bunch of kids playing Lois Lane, and it doesn't take much courage to take potshots at people from some basement on Burrowes Street. But critiquing how people go about raising money for Thon is too much ("Fines for not canning show greeks are losing true meaning of Thon," Feb. 15). You know what Thon is really all about? It's about raising as much money as humanly possible to help kids with cancer. Who cares why people are out there canning? I know a number of grateful families that don't. If you want to get back to this "true" meaning of Thon then you can tell the 5-year-old that they can't afford his or her next treatment or that his or her parents cannot come visit them in Hershey because they can't afford the time off work.
