"But we also play contemporary, original songs. We play mostly our own music, but do occasional covers."
While both Reggie and Kim Harris sing and harmonize during their performances, Reggie Harris backs their vocals with the acoustic guitar.
Kim Harris said the couple draws influences from various kinds of music as well as performers.
"We both grew up listening to all different kinds of music," she said. "So, we draw influences from some freedom singers and a lot of different kinds of music like gospel, jazz and Motown."
Kim Harris said the couple travels for about half of the year and since January have been to many cities including Albuquerque, N.M., Santa Fe, N.M., and Boston and will be traveling to Montreal, Philadelphia and of course, State College, where they have performed at Acoustic Brew before.
"We loved all the cities we've been to this year," Kim Harris said.
"We don't really have a favorite. Every place is just so different," Harris added.
"We like Acoustic Brew because the audience knows and appreciates contemporary folk music and they always sing along when we ask them to," she said.
So, what's it like sharing a marriage and a career with someone?
"It's great fun," Kim Harris said. "We've been traveling together since we've been married and, well, we've been married a pretty long time," Kim Harris said.
But, we both have outside interests. Reggie coaches a basketball team and I'm getting my master's degree, so we have that stuff and then we have our work that we do together," Kim Harris said.
Acoustic Brew volunteer Mel DeYoung said Kim Harris and Reggie Harris recently came out with a new and interesting album, Let My People Go!
"It's a collaboration with a rabbi, and it's a mix of traditional African-American music and Jewish material," DeYoung said.
"It's very interesting. A song might begin with a Jewish prayer and then turn into a gospel song."
DeYoung said the Acoustic Brew audiences typically really enjoy the Harrises.
He also added that the series is glad to have them back again.
"This duo, they have a way of building communities through performance," DeYoung added.
"They change things in a really positive way."
Acoustic Brew's performer liaison, Catherine Grigor, said she has heard the Harrises perform and is "intensely interested in their music."
"They're just a very personable and dynamic couple," Grigor said.
The couple will also be holding a harmony workshop at the Center for Well Being in Lemont before they perform from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Kim Harris said she and her husband are excited to return to the Acoustic Brew.
"We're really looking forward to it," she said.
"I hope people are ready to listen and enjoy, but also to sing along."
