'Good enough' attitude contributes to obesity
Today's magazines are encrusted with images of sexy women and men who are in the prime of their lives. They are fit, thin, "happy" and dare we say "healthy." Yet we've heard over the last 10 or 15 years that normal men and women need to be happy with themselves and not emulate these icons' lifestyles. No matter what these specimens in the press are shown to represent, people have been encouraged to deny that anyone is actually healthy. Most are left to rely on a settling and comforting sense that they are "good enough." Is there a possible correlation between this idea and the new obesity crisis facing our nation, among adults and children alike? Could some or most adults be teaching their children and themselves that no matter what they do, eat, or how they exercise, they are fine. I believe this propaganda of "good enough" is actually detrimental to making an effort to be healthy since most are left to think that doing more than the norm could be over the top, leaving them to promote less effort in the long run.
