[ Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005 ] Letter to the Editor
USG should disband because it's useless
Golf claps to USG -- again -- for tackling the really important issues ("Assembly president calls for apology," Feb. 14). Nothing says "effective democracy" like a stronglyworded letter by someone whose thin skin couldn't take a little criticism. You know, I'm still not sure why we continue to keep USG around. They don't really do that much, and the few projects they do undertake could probably be handled by other organizations. Organizing buses home? Association of Residence Halls Students could probably take care of that. Registering voters? College Republicans and College Democrats handled that much more effectively. Lobbying Harrisburg for funding? I'm not sure if you guys even do that anymore. If you do, it sure as hell hasn't been effective. The "We Are" campaign? What's that even about? The USG Supreme Court was stripped of their power to register student groups earlier this semester, and after they got through bitching and moaning about it, it really did work out better for everyone, eliminating the tedious bureaucratic system they had established for a more streamlined process. Let's take the next step. I'm graduating, but I am willing to help organize and manage the campaign of anyone willing to run for USG -- senators or president -- on a platform of dismantling the Undergraduate Student Government, and dividing its projects among different facets of the university. Anybody with me? Brian Morrison
