NEWS

With all of the gifts Valentine's Day brings, couples have flooded State College businesses this weekend for some last-minute shopping.

Dancers are finding a new way to embrace dreams at this year's Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

While many couples are planning romantic dinners and special dates for Valentine's Day, single people have some plans of their own to celebrate the holiday.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Academic Assembly President Mark Levin is demanding a public apology from and the dismissal of Multicultural Affairs Director Mark Bagley for what Levin called "unprofessional behavior."

Kelly Yeaton, a former Penn State professor of theatre arts, died Thursday from congestive heart failure. He was 93.

As the sound of laughs and shouts echo off the walls of the HUB-Robeson Center Saturday night, one distinct noise filters through the mess -- the scratching of a thick black sharpie as it flies wildly over paper.

News in Brief

A chapter in the greek community has taken it upon themselves to ensure members participate in canning weekends for the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

Those interested in watching magicians in action can now do so at the Bob Elliott Theater, which recently opened its doors to State College residents.

Lingze Duan stood puzzled in front of dozens of Chinese riddles.

SPORTS

Assistant coach Jay Paterno said the football team's goal-line stand against Indiana this season might be one of the biggest moments in the team's history and pulled the team out of its rut.

The women's gymnastics team shouldn't need to climb the negativity rope today.

They say that a loss makes for a long trip on the plane ride back home.

Like a boy playing a game with a clearly overmatched younger sibling, the No. 4 Penn State men's volleyball team made quick work of hapless Mt. Olive on Friday and disappointing Southern Cal on Saturday at Rec Hall.

Tearing around the final turn of the 4x400-meter relay, in front of a screaming throng of teammates and fans at this past weekend's Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, with Eastern Michigan's Bria Woods literally right beside her, Penn State's Kamilah Salaam silently refused to lose.

The Penn State Lady Icers hoped to avoid their sixth straight loss when they took on Bates College on Saturday in their last regular season game. After losing the opening game 5-1, the team turned things around in the second game.

Attention, passengers, the train is now arriving at domination station.

If winning the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup trophy proves to be the predictor of the Big Ten champion for the second straight year, Penn State's women's track team can start sewing together that next championship banner.

The way things are going for the No. 25 Lady Lions on the road these days, the tied score at halftime yesterday was good enough to evoke a nice chuckle.

Statistics can sometimes be misleading -- but they certainly told the story of this weekend's results.

Saturday night's game against Ohio State at the Bryce Jordan Center was a perfect opportunity for redemption.

The Charlotte Sting acquired former Penn State women's basketball standout Helen Darling. The deal was announced yesterday by Sting general manager and head coach Trudi Lacey. In a sign-and-trade deal, the Sting received Darling and a second round pick (No. 24 overall) from the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for Charlotte's second round pick (No. 17 overall) in the 2005 WNBA Draft. A restricted free agent, Darling signed a multi-year contract. Per team policy, further details were not disclosed.

Penn State field hockey coach Char Morett has announced that the team signed two of the nation's top high school players in Allison Scola and Jennifer Long.

Everything for the Penn State fencing team seemed to click on Saturday, as both the men's and women's teams went undefeated.

There were about 200 meters left in the last leg of the distance medley relay at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup this weekend at home. Senior Chris Foster had virtually given up, but then he noticed that the leader of the race was starting to tire.

ARTS

Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., is featuring Magic Hat beer. Specials include $2 Coronas, half-priced well liquor and happy hour from 10 p.m. to midnight (231-4745).

Sometimes the surroundings here at Penn State can be deceiving, especially if you live downtown, as I do.

Leave the candy, flowers and candlelit dinner on the sidelines this Valentine's Day.
