Everything for the Penn State fencing team seemed to click on Saturday, as both the men's and women's teams went undefeated.
The Nittany Lions, in their last dual competition of the season before the Junior Olympics next weekend, beat every team they faced at the Penn Duals at the University of Pennsylvania.
The men ended their season undefeated at 14-0 after beating No. 5 Columbia 17-10 in its toughest bouts of the day on Saturday.
"We could not have ended the season any better," captain Marten Zagunis said. "Going undefeated should drop any doubts about our team."
The Lions also defeated St. John's, though the fencers in the saber could not defeat the Red Storm's Sergey Isayenko in the saber.
Isayenko, one of the top fencers in the saber in the country, defeated every Penn State saber fencer he faced. The Lions' men saber team had no trouble with anyone else all day. Sophomores Axel Reblewski (7-2) and Ian Farr (6-2) led the team to the overall saber victory. Seniors Nonpatat Panchan (8-1) and Ian Schlaepfer (6-2) led the way in the foil.
"Our foil team has come a long way this year." Zagunis said. "Some considered them weaker at the beginning of the year, but now they are our strongest group of fencers."
In the epee, the strongest fencer was freshman Arthur Urman who went 8-1.
"The epee team has struggled a little lately," Zagunis said. "We all pick each other up and rely on each other to win."
The women picked up five wins this weekend against Columbia, Cornell, Penn, Temple and St. John's.
All five wins came after a weekend where the team lost to Ohio State and top ranked Notre Dame.
"It was great to see how good the women competed on Saturday," Zagunis said. "They really bounced back."
The Lions were led in the saber by sophomores Sophia Hiss, who went 13-2, and Lauren Hillstrom (11-4).
Junior Annekathrin Donath had a strong showing in the foil at 10-2.
In the epee, the Lions continued their dominant season with performances by junior Katarzyna Trzopek and sophomore Case Szarwark.
"The women's epee have just been awesome all year," Zagunis said.
The women's record at the end of the season is 15-2.
