Having off MLK holiday dishonors our veterans
I write to express my disappointment with Penn State's administration ("Officials cancel MLK Day classes," Feb. 10). Canceling a day of classes attaches an inherent level of recognition to the particular day in question. Do not misunderstand me, I believe this is a day honoring a man whose ideas are worthy of recognition. Unfortunately the level of recognition attached by Penn State, I believe, does a disservice to other days the university does not acknowledge. There are many days on the calendar that should be recognized by Penn State at a greater level than they currently are; two such examples are Veterans Day and Presidents Day. These two days honor many great men and women in the history of our country and largely go unrecognized at Penn State. Penn State classes are not cancelled on Veterans Day, although there are many worthy services Penn State students, faculty and administrators could do for veterans, especially elderly ones, on this day as well as for men and women currently serving our country, whether we are at war or at peace. Presidents Day goes largely unrecognized across the country. Canceling classes to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is the right thing to do, but only if classes are cancelled on other days to recognize other men and women in our country's history who are as deserving, if not more so, of this acknowledgement.
