They may have graduated, but some Penn State alumni have yet to hang up their dancing shoes.
Jen Cohen, the 2003 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon Family Relations overall, will take a trip down memory lane next weekend when she dances in Thon for the Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group.
"My dancing partner, Jamie Miller, and I, were the members who raised the most money this year," she said. "I'm really excited to go back and see the kids and the families."
The group was created to bring alumni together for Thon's 25th anniversary.
It was formed to give Penn State alumni a chance to donate their money and time to an effort they spent much of their college years volunteering to, Treasurer Rob Schmidt said.
Secretary Stacy Forbes made Thon history in 1995 when she was named the first female overall chair.
"As an alumnus, I have had the unique perspective of being able to dance [in 2001] for the Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group," Forbes said. "It's great to visit Thon each year and reunite with old friends, even if you live as far away as Colorado."
Forbes said it is hard to believe 10 years have passed since her last Thon as a student.
"I can still remember, with chilling detail, standing on stage with my committee ... on Feb. 19, 1995, doing our last line dance," she said.
Schmidt said the organization hosts regional fund-raising events all around the country each year to raise money for Thon.
"There was just a dinner event last week in New York City, which raised over $5,000," he said.
Schmidt was on the overall committee in 1980 and said that although he has yet to dance for the alumni group, he is not ruling it out.
"I'm one of the oldest in the group, but I've never danced," he said. "I might someday."
The group hosts canning trips, offers a scholarship to Penn State students participating in Thon and its members are encouraged to fund raise independently.
"In past years we've donated between $10,000 to $15,000," Schmidt said.
"This number is probably higher because we encourage alumni to donate to Thon through the organizations they participated in while they were at Penn State," he added.
Vice President Todd Waltman was the 1998 overall chair and danced as a freshman.
"I probably won't dance for Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group because I already danced once in my life, and I think that's enough," he said. "But I will be there this year cheering on our dancers."
