Goals statement from greek community lacks purpose and substance

For the past year, the greek community has been drafting a plan to bring the pride back to Penn State's fraternities and sororities.

The greek "Dream Statement," as it has been deemed, is just that.

A dream.

The statement outlines the ideals the greek community is striving to uphold in their initiative "Greek Pride: A Return to Glory."

The greek "Dream Statement" would seem too good to be true, if it actually detailed goals for the greek community.

Instead, a year and three paragraphs later, the statement is more of a dramatic monologue than detailed actions being used to "bring the pride back."

It only took the greek community a year to draft a statement that uses intelligent words instead of intelligent ideas.

It is commendable to see the greeks attempting to create a positive image for themselves at the university and portray themselves as a vital part of the local community.

The greeks at Penn State have constantly been on the short end of the stick when it comes to respect. However, the "Dream Statement" does not seem to be the answer to the question of image.

How exactly does the greek community plan to establish the image they have created within the statement?

What type of goals must be put into action in order to successfully become an active participant within the community while maintaining a positive image?

These are the type of questions the greeks should be asking instead of spending a year drafting a statement that outlines the type of image they wish to portray. The statement resembles the Gladiator movie broadcasted in Beaver Stadium before each home football game, which is meant to fire up the fans before another unfortunate loss.

In other words, the statement is a public relations attempt used to fire up the community before a disappointing regression back to the fraternity and sorority life Penn State has come to know.

Until the university and the surrounding community is given a set of goals and sees action from the greek community, it is going to be difficult to take the greeks seriously. The "Dream Statement" is a step for the greek community, but it has yet to be a noticeable step in the right direction.

There are people within the greek system that want to take that step. But past actions have shown Penn State that it is going to take more than a statement of empty hopes and promises.

As the statement reads, "[They] are Penn State Greeks," but "We Are" still looking for a serious attempt from the greek community.
