Lady Icers attempt to improve, fall well short of victory at Rhode Island

The Penn State Lady Icers' offensive woes continued to plague the team this past weekend in a two-game set at No. 4 Rhode Island.

The previous weekend, the Lady Icers hosted No. 5 Western Michigan and dropped both contests, 11-4 and 4-3. While the team showed improvement in its tight loss in the second game, a lack of aggressive shooting hampered the Lady Icers in both games.

The Lady Icers had opened the 2004-05 season in October against Rhode Island and ended up tying the first game, 3-3, and dropping the second, 3-1. Coming into Saturday's game in Kingston, R.I., the team was confident that it could improve on that result and pick up an upset.

The Rams had other ideas, though. They jumped on the Lady Icers right away, scoring their first goal in the first 1:23 of the game. Rhode Island's offense kept up the relentless attack and went up 5-0 after a single period.

Rhode Island continued its scoring barrage throughout the second and third periods, picking up five more goals. The Lady Icers had no response on the offensive end and fell by a final score of 10-0. The Rams kept Penn State off guard by using many different options for scoring. Rhode Island got goals from seven different players, three of whom scored two goals.

Despite trying new strategies in the second game, the Lady Icers were unable to come away with a better result in the second game on Sunday.

Once again the offense couldn't get any production and the defense couldn't make any stops. In the first period, the Lady Icers seemed to compete at a higher level and held URI to only one goal. The Rams exploded, though, in the second period, and the Lady Icers had no response, ultimately losing, 7-0.

"It was pretty much one period there where they hurt us a lot," senior captain Stephanie Feyock said of defeat.

The Lady Icers' loss dropped their overall record to 4-9-3. As in previous games, a major problem was a lack of shooting when the team had the opportunity. This was highlighted in the second game, when the Lady Icers only had four shots on goal.

The team will have to improve on this situation quickly because it faces another tough opponent this weekend in No. 15 Bates College.

"We just have to work on staying spread out and adjust to playing with the different lines," Feyock said.
