Letter to the Editor
Democrats wage war for altruistic reasons

This is in response to Nick Klein's misinformed and misleading letter ("Democrats have trail of bad military calls," Feb. 4). He attempts to prove Democrats are weak in regards to matters of war and provides mostly incomplete and false information.

John Kennedy did remove missiles from Turkey, but that was part of the compromise with the Soviet premier that ended the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In exchange for that withdrawal, the Soviets turned their fleet around and never again attempted to plant missiles in Cuba. Kennedy averted a situation that very nearly turned into an all out nuclear war. Reagan did get our hostages back from Iran - through illegal means.

Has Klein ever heard of the Iran-Contra affair?

It was an illegal swap of hostages for arms to the Contra guerrilla fighters in Central America.

Klein says the Clinton administration did nothing in response to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

Really? I seem to recall the men responsible for the bombing being captured, tried and convicted in an American court of law.

What Klein fails to mention is Clinton's military initiative to end the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Serbia.

He also fails to mention Clinton's actions against warlords in Somalia who were committing genocide through starvation. These were noble causes for military actions.

Klein seems to believe that if war isn't fought for imperialistic reasons or in searches for phantom weapons of mass destruction, then it shouldn't be fought at all.
