Eagles shot glasses -- check. Eagles cheerleading calendar -- check. Eagles jerseys -- check. Life-size standup of McNabb -- check. One crazed Eagles fan -- definite check.
"To have the upper hand after three years of failing and getting crap from Steelers' fans is awesome," said self-proclaimed Eagles fanatic Phil Mackey (senior-architectural engineering). "They hold the season win over our heads, but that's okay because last time I checked, we're in the Super Bowl."
Mackey has been waiting for this Sunday since about the first grade.
"For my birthday, my parents got me a Randall Cunningham jersey, which I'm still bitter they eventually got rid of it," he said. "Every Sunday, I'd watch the game with my Dad. I'm just born and raised."
Mackey rattles off other beloved players and moments in Eagles' history like second-grade math.
"[Donovan] McNabb is our lord and savior, but my all-time favorite would have to be Cunningham," he said. "He was real flashy. I grew up idolizing him. I mean, what quarterback can punt for 90-some yards? And Hank Fraley is my favorite starter. I just love offensive linemen. They have no stats but work hard every game. I have little man-crushes on them."
For each and every Eagles game, Mackey has a number of rituals and traditions he follows without fail, and it all began with the pants.
"I got them in about eighth grade," he said, holding up a pair of small, black sweatpants with a hole or two in less than convenient locations. "They didn't start as Eagles pants but I started wearing them freshmen year and that's when they started turning around and I wore them from then on."
Toss in a pair of "grandpa" slippers, a McNabb jersey, a game-time blanket and the exact same spot on the couch and Mackey is ready for kickoff. He admits, though, that sometimes his superstitions have gotten the best of him.
"One game last year, they were playing like crap and my roommate went in the kitchen," he said. "Just then Troy Vincent got an interception and returned it for a touchdown so I made my roommate stand at the counter for the rest of the game because they turned it around while he was out of the room. I made him do it the next week ... but it didn't work."
Mackey and his friends initially set plans into motion to try and make it to the Super Bowl in Florida but stopped short of making a potentially huge error in judgment.
"This guy on eBay was selling five tickets and my friends and I were all going to get them," he said. "But he didn't want us finalizing the sale officially through eBay. It was kind of shady so we didn't do it. But if I had $4,000 to do it for real, I'd drop it in a second."
Instead, he will celebrate with a group of close friends at his apartment, in the comfort of his lucky couch.
One rule, of course: no Steelers fans.
"I despise the Steelers and I despise Steelers fans," he said. "When I hear the 'Here we go Steelers' chant, my blood boils."
If there's one thing Mackey hates more, it's fair-weather Steelers fans who "bought Big Ben jerseys when they hit eight-and-0." Mackey is no such fan of the Eagles.
"Come Monday morning," he said, "whether we win, lose, or get smashed, I'm wearing my Eagles jersey with pride."
