The New Guys

Derrick Williams
WR -- 6'0" -- 189
Greenbelt, Md. -- Eleanor Roosevelt H.S.

Offered a scholarship by Penn State before he even entered high school, the nation's No. 1 overall recruit per Rivals.com cited that loyalty when announcing for the Lions shortly before Christmas. A do-everything athlete at Eleanor Roosevelt, Williams projects as an explosive wide receiver and punt/kick returner who has already enrolled for the spring semester. The Lions hope that Williams will become the deep threat that they haven't had any semblance of since Bryant Johnson's senior year, and has the talent to start from day one.

Justin King
DB -- 6'0" -- 183
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Gateway H.S.

King gave a huge boost to the Lions recruiting class back in November when he surprised many by choosing Penn State over Michigan. Rated as the second best defensive back in the nation per Rivals.com, King is unanimously recognized as one of the top incoming players in the country. Along with former prep superstar Derrick Williams, King has already enrolled for the spring semester and is expected to make an immediate impact on the Lions' anemic return game, on defense and possibly even on offense.

Lydell Sargeant
RB -- 5'10" -- 172
Lompoc, Calif. -- Cabrillo H.S.

Justin King's childhood friend quickly followed his former schoolmate, committing to the Lions just days after King announced. The elusive tailback made a big impression on the national scene when he tallied 172 total yards and a touchdown in the CaliFlorida Bowl, featuring prep all-stars from California and Florida. Sargeant was named MVP of the California team and is considered one of the top running backs from the state.

Jerome Hayes
LB -- 6'2" -- 225
Bayonne, N.J. -- Bayonne H.S.

Hayes' recruitment was a roller-coaster ride that eventually saw him give his verbal commitment to Penn State just before faxing his letter of intent yesterday. Rated in the upper echelon of linebackers in the country and as one of the top players in New Jersey, Hayes further solidifies the Lions' linebacking corps.

Willie Harriot
DB -- 5'10" -- 180
New Haven, Conn. -- Hyde Leadership School

Best known for his impressive 4.4 40 speed, Harriot epitomizes the type of athlete that Penn State sought for this year's class. Fast and capable of playing both sides of the ball, Harriot likely projects as a cornerback and is one of many incoming speedsters that could make an early impact on the Lions' lackluster special teams.

Knowledge Timmons
DB -- 5'10" -- 175
York, Pa. -- William Penn H.S.

Though the anticipated wave of commitments following Derrick Williams' verbal to Penn State never came, Timmons was clearly influenced, committing soon after Williams. Best known for his prowess on the track -- he's the reigning 100- and 200-meter PIAA champion -- Timmons brings incredible speed to the table and is an intriguing prospect in many roles.

Daryll Clark
QB -- 6'3" -- 190
Youngstown, Ohio -- Ursuline H.S./Kiski Prep

Initially a verbal commitment of last year's class, Clark was one of the many quarterbacks offered by Penn State after Chad Henne chose Michigan. Clark is attending Kiski Prep Academy this year and will still retain his full four years of college eligibility. Clark is a balanced signal caller who has above-average mobility.

Francis Claude
TE -- 6'5" -- 246
Vancouver, Quebec -- Champlain Regional College

Every decade or so, Penn State reaches up north to land a recruit. Most notable in the '80s was Pete Giftopolous. In the '90s it was Phil Yeboah-Kodie. Now the Lions are hoping they have another future starter in Claude, who is considered one of the best prospects in Canada. Claude has already enrolled at University Park for the spring semester.

Kevin Cousins
WR -- 6'3" -- 189
Richmond, Va. -- Huguenot H.S.

Penn State's first verbal commitment of this year's class, Cousins committed to the Lions back in May. Though largely overshadowed by fellow classmate and wideout-to-be Derrick Williams, Cousins adds size to Penn State's receiving corps.

Dennis Landolt
OL -- 6'5" -- 268
Delran, N.J. -- Holy Cross H.S.

After landing a plethora of offensive linemen in last year's recruiting class, the Lions only landed a pair this year, with Landolt headlining the two.

The rest of the Class of 2009
