“I wouldn’t care if we didn’t get anybody else but those two kids.”
Joe Paterno on King and Williams
After the nation's No. 1-ranked recruit committed to Penn State, he had a message for all those other highly touted, uber-talented prep superstars.
"Any other recruit I talk to I say the same thing," said athlete Derrick Williams, the top high school player in the country according to Rivals.com. "I say, 'Come to Penn State with me and let's take this sleeping Lion to the national championship.' "
That proposition didn't quite pan out as planned, as the list of recruits who will join Williams as a Nittany Lion includes just one other five-star recruit, cornerback Justin King, and two four-star recruits. But the incoming class of 2005 suits Penn State just fine as, in the 19 recruits who have already signed, it has a fair dose of its primary need -- speed -- and, of course, the premier duo which head coach Joe Paterno indicated would make or break the class.
There were signing day surprises, both good -- Jerome Hayes to Penn State -- and not so good -- Walker Ashley to Southern Cal -- but this is how the class stands after the first day of the college football signing period. It isn't quite the class anticipated but, as good fortune would have it, the keys to the Penn State kingdom rest in the hands of exactly the two guys the ruler wanted.
