We've all complained about it.
It's about time we do something about it.
As tuition continues to climb for students, we are left wondering, "What can we do?"
Each year, a rally in Harrisburg is organized to appeal to legislators to halt the decrease of allocations in an attempt to lower student tuition bills.
However, most students are left in the dark year after year about their ability to participate in student incentives for lowering tuition.
The members of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), our elected officials, should be participating and promoting participation in the rally.
But where are the fliers, posters and e-mails? Why is our student government lacking in their promotion department?
This year's rally will be held on March 15, and USG is expecting 600 students from across the state to attend.
In the past, only a few dozen students from Penn State have made the trip to Harrisburg to show their support for lowering tuition.
And Penn State will most likely stay at that small percentage of total participants if USG does not do more than allocate a few dollars for travel expenses.
Without a buzz on campus, students who care about rising tuition costs will miss their opportunity to act.
But if enough interest is stirred within the student body, USG can hit their projected number of student attendees.
USG has discussed the possibility of asking administrators to give those students who wish to participate an excused absence.
Administrators should allow students to miss class in order to exercise their voices.
As for funding, USG only allotted $100 funding for the trip. More needs to be done than that. USG should be working to actively organize transportation for students -- whether by bus or by carpool -- so that it is as easy as possible for students to go.
If we are ever going to convince legislators to increase or at the very least maintain allocations to Penn State, we need a big turnout in Harrisburg.
And a big turnout requires funding, excuses from classes and a stirred interest on campus. Unfortunately, we do not have any of the requirements to have a successful rally at this point.
USG needs to get started. Let's get buses. Let's get brown bag lunches. Let's all go on a field trip that matters.
If USG wants to represent the student body, they need to get a jump on things. We need to make a splash in Harrisburg and get legislators talking.
There is strength in numbers, everyone.
