Eagles fans superstitious as big game approaches

Collegian Staff Writer

As if three straight NFC championship losses weren't enough of a jinx for Philadelphia Eagles fans, now they have to worry about the Super Bowl as well.

With this Sunday's contest set in stone, several local Eagles fans are playing the superstition game leading up to the big showdown with the New England Patriots.

"I've yet to wash the clothes that I wore during the divisional playoff game with the [Minnesota] Vikings," Jason Bostur (senior-crime, law and justice) said. "I don't wear them every day, I just wear my Eagles jersey, but I'm planning on wearing that same outfit for the Super Bowl again."

Stinky clothes aren't the only things that have been keeping Bostur superstitious during the last two weeks, as he finds even the most minor details to be gargantuan this time of year.

"I have the Eagles' fight song on my computer that I listen to daily and that I kept on loop for like an hour before the championship game," he said. "I also refuse to play Madden at all during the playoffs; I just feel like that might keep them from winning."

Todd Drager (sophomore-architectural engineering) found himself spending extra cash this past week in the name of team support.

"I bought a Terrell Owens T-shirt and a [Donovan] McNabb jersey, which is the first jersey I've ever bought," he said. "I'm planning on wearing it every day leading up to the Super Bowl. I also check the Philadelphia Eagles Web site every day and read every article that I can find about the team right now."

Despite his immense desire to see the Eagles crowned Super Bowl champions, Drager said his fanaticism has its limits.

"I don't really want to start praying for the team at this point because that's not really what prayer is all about," he said.

While some fans may be crossing the thin line between team support and temporary insanity, others are keeping their thoughts in perspective.

"I think a few of my friends are really into the superstition idea, but I feel that if we're good enough to do it then we'll do it," Danny Rose (sophomore-human development and family studies) said. "I am confident that the team will be able to pull it out."

Should the Eagles pull out a victory, Rose already has an idea of what to do immediately following the game.

"If they win I'm going to drive back to Philly and get cheesesteaks with some friends," he said.

Bostur said he has been planning his victory schedule out for some time.

"I'm going back to my home in the suburbs to watch the game and if they win I'm going into the city," he said. "I'm also planning on cutting classes next Tuesday in the event of a victory parade."

Although every sporting event has both a winner and a loser, Drager said he doesn't want to think about the prospect of defeat.

"Getting to the Super Bowl is everything I've ever hoped for because the city of Philadelphia really deserves a championship," he said. "I'll be really disappointed if we lose, more so than I've been for the past three years when we lost the NFC championship."

Rose said he will not devote too much of his time and thought to the game's outcome.

"If they lose, I'll initially be disappointed, but then I'll look back at the season and think of it positively," he said. "I try not to let those things bother me because it's not the end of the world."
