To Tyler!
WB heartthrob Tyler Hilton shines in newest musical try.

Collegian Staff Writer

When I put The Tracks of Tyler Hilton into my iPod, it immediately put the CD under the genre blues. That's when I got to wonder about this kid.

Sure, Hilton's on the WB's hit television show One Tree Hill, and he has seemed to follow the singer/songwriter trend Howie Day started and Ryan Cabrera copied: That crazy "I just rolled out of bed and think I look sexy with my huge messy hair." But what does Tyler Hilton (No relation to Paris) offer that I can't get from listening to a John Mayer CD?

He may only be 20 years old, but the Palm Springs native has been performing for quite some time and his latest album, The Tracks of Tyler Hilton, has actually been out since September. But not only until recently did his song "When it Comes" start gaining popularity with the Total Request Live crowd.

Sure the younger girls' are a fan of Hilton's boyish good looks and his smooth yet raspy voice, but as I listened some more to his CD, I found myself not being able to get his songs out of my head.

Hilton is able to bring emotion across his songs with his raspy voice, his ability to play both piano and guitar and his love for all different types of music, such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and B.B. King.

His hit song "When it Comes" is just a small taste of what listeners can get when listening to The Tracks of Tyler Hilton. The song is catchy and more often than not, stuck in my head.

Hilton has been doing a lot of promotional tours getting the word out about this song.

My favorite part of Hilton's live performances is that his raspy voice is really showcased and he is given the opportunity to give the songs their own life.

Of course, it also doesn't hurt that he sounds just as good, if not better, live as he does on his CD.

The songs on Hilton's CD are about the usual: love, adventure and traveling across the country in a "Rolling Home."

On the lead of track, "When it Comes," Hilton sings, "Well, I'll comb my hair like Elvis and grab an old Gretch 59 and you'd hardly recognize me if you saw me from behind." Maybe Hilton didn't realize that when he wrote this song that he would actually land the role of Elvis Presley in the upcoming movie "Walk the Line." Not all of Hilton's songs on the record have literally come true, but they all do seem to be pretty personal, especially "The Letter Song," with Hilton's hopes to one day be romantic. The songs vary from piano to guitar as the CD progresses. However, Hilton does supply enough blues licks in his CD to qualify him as blues on my iPod.
