NEWS

According to a recent study released by National Collaborative on Diversity in the Teaching Force (NCDTF), students excel when taught by professors of the same race.

Because of the access Corl Street would provide to the commuter parking garage project, it is becoming a key area in Penn State's development of west campus. For that reason, Penn State spokesman Tysen Kendig said the university is looking into purchasing two properties in that area. The properties could help make room for a commuter-parking garage and to widen the intersection at Corl Street and West College Avenue.

A new law signed by Gov. Ed Rendell last December requiring a five-year minimum mandatory prison sentence for people convicted of drug dealing while in possession of a firearm became effective Saturday.

Following the reintroduction of the Marriage Protection Amendment (MPA) to the U.S. Senate, students are starting a letter campaign to further protest the amendment.

The Schlow Memorial Library board of trustees is considering a name change for the library after construction of the new building is complete.

Pennsylvania State Police arrested nine people for possession and delivery of drugs Thursday morning, State Police Cpl. John Bravis said.

In a 36-minute meeting last night, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate learned that Office of the Physical Plant (OPP) will not enact their plan to pay student groups to clean up classroom trash.

Joe Colucci can breathe a sigh of relief.

Although nothing was officially decided regarding whether to eliminate the health and physical activity requirement (GHA) at yesterday's Faculty Senate meeting, the consensus was overwhelmingly opposed to removing it.

As part of a continued statewide expansion of restaurants, State College will soon see a new T.G.I. Friday's at the site of the former Chi Chi's Mexican Restaurant, 1215 N. Atherton St.

Penn State students could have a day off from classes for next year's Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Day, Penn State President Graham Spanier said during yesterday's University Faculty Senate meeting.

With the help of a $40 million state grant, a new materials science research building will allow ideas from fuel cells to artificial organs to become a reality.

Christina Schneider woke early last Wednesday to the sound of a foghorn. She spent the rest of the morning in her room, wearing a life jacket and waiting.

Patton Township police posted a sign on North Atherton Street yesterday at the site of Sunday's hit-and-run accident in an attempt to find the driver of the vehicle responsible for the accident, which killed a 68-year-old Park Forest man.

SPORTS

Junior men's volleyball player Matt Proper has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Player of the Week, league officials announced yesterday. The honor is the first of Proper's career and the first this season for the sixth-ranked Nittany Lions (5-2).

Former Penn State women's basketball standout Kelly Mazzante will be part of the NCAA 2005 Honors program that ESPN2 is airing at 2 p.m. today.

Going back to serve against No. 12 Ohio State in front of a live television audience, Matt Proper probably never even considered the possibility.

The Penn State men's basketball team matches up almost identically with tonight's opponent, although its record suggests otherwise.

Some could become the next crop of All-Americans to wear the Blue and White.

The No. 19 Penn State wrestling team might have started slowly, but in the past two weeks the Nittany Lions seem to be on the road to becoming national contenders, despite the myriad of injuries with which they've dealt.

The countdown has officially started for the Lady Lions now that they've passed the halfway mark of Big Ten play.

Jenny Brenden is the spark plug. And, apparently, Jen Harris is "the truth."

Last summer, Luis Vargas competed for the rings, both the international symbol and the gymnastic apparatus.

The goaltender carousel is finally coming to a stop -- more than two years after it began.
