New locker security way to save tuition
In response to Lauren Warner's column ("If The Locker Ain't Broke, A Better Way Won't Fix It," Jan. 31). I would like to say a few things. First off, I'm sorry for your roommate's recent misfortune. Secondly, you are right in that the old lockers were not broken; however, the system was. The problem was gym-goers were often not returning their keys at the end of their workouts for one reason or another. It had gotten so bad that the White Building had spent more than $10,000 in replacing missing keys and changing mechanisms since the system was started about three years ago. Next, congratulations on remembering which locker was yours; many people do not. As for the "complicated" directions, let me clarify your mistake; put your combination in and then turn the knob to the left and finally scramble the numbers. These simple steps are printed clearly on each and every locker. Finally, gym-goers, fear not. Your belongings are safer from would-be thieves as the White Building staff is now keeping a log of patrons who require assistance to operate the lockers. Proper identification must be supplied to the staff, and your name, the date and the time of the incident are recorded. Remember that these lockers were changed to save your tuition money and they are easy to operate if you carefully read the directions. Philip Nightingale
