50 additional dancers chosen in lottery
THON 2005

Collegian Staff Writer

Joe Colucci can breathe a sigh of relief.

At 5 a.m. yesterday, Colucci (senior-civil engineering) was chosen from the list of potential individual dancers and new groups in the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon's lottery.

"I was nervous. I couldn't sleep," Colucci said.

He will be dancing for the lacrosse club, who was able to register a pair of dancers, in addition to receiving another pair through the lottery.

Thon rules and regulations chair Evan Jacobs said the lottery draws 50 dancers. The lottery allows people who are not affiliated with an organization, or those who belong to an organization that did not have dancers the previous year, an opportunity to dance.

Lisa Beckman's efforts have also paid off. Her organization raised enough money for her to dance in this year's Thon.

Beckman (senior-American studies and sociology) will be dancing for three combined organizations: Undergraduate Student Leaders, Service Learning Coordinators and Theta Chi fraternity, 523 S. Allen St. The organizations have raised more than $7,000 so far and have registered four dancers.

"This is my first year dancing," Beckman said. "I am Thon chair for the organizations, but it was well worth all the work."

Due to space constraints, Jacobs said there will be 700 dancers this year, which is two fewer dancers than last year.

Evans said e-mail messages were sent out early yesterday morning to notify those who were chosen to dance.

"To be eligible for the lottery, dancers must raise a minimum $1,100 per couple. For every $150 raised over $1,100, they get an extra chance in the lottery," he said.

Other students, however, were not as lucky as Colucci and Beckman.

Teela Ross (junior-marketing) and roommate Ashley Hughes (junior-marketing) said they waited by their computers all yesterday morning for an e-mail telling them whether they were chosen to dance as independents through the lottery.

"I never got an e-mail, so I went up to the HUB [Robeson Center] office, and there I was told that I was not chosen to dance," Ross said.

Hughes said she was disappointed with the news, but she will try to dance next year, probably as part of an organization.

"I'm still going to participate in Thon through morale," Hughes said. "I knew there was a chance I might not get picked to dance, but I still wanted to be involved in some way."

Lindsay Gaspar (sophomore-music education), who will be dancing in Thon for the Singing Lions, said she found it harder to raise money this year because of the increase in the amount of money needed to register.

"Because of our strict performance schedule we weren't able to go canning, but we scrambled to get enough money together for registration," she said.
