Icers split 2 with Wolves
ACHA Hockey

Collegian Staff Writer

The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers had the blueprint for the rest of their season all mapped out.

They were relieved to finally have some depth back in their lineup from returning seniors like Kevin Jaeger, Eric Harbaugh and Joe Maglaque.

And besides that, the team wanted payback.

A chance to avenge a disappointing home loss at the hands of No. 8 Michigan-Dearborn back in mid-November.

But they may have gone about it the wrong way.

The Icers (18-6-2) traveled to Michigan-Dearborn over the weekend for a two-game set beginning on Friday.

The Icers lost by a score of 3-2 in as frustrating a game as the team has played all year.

According to Icers coach Joe Battista, the team received hardly any calls from officials.

And, as a result, a pair of Icers let their emotions get the best of them.

The normally reserved Mike Carrano and the Icers' leading scorer, Jaeger, were both disqualified from the game and suspended for the next after some uncharacteristic actions on the ice.

"We didn't get a call all afternoon and it was very frustrating for the guys, but that's not an excuse," Battista said.

Jaeger was ejected from the game for "mouthing off" to an official, as Battista put it.

The mayhem didn't end there as Carrano became furious after he was tripped directly in front an official and no call was made.

After receiving a minor penalty for cross-checking a Dearborn player, Carrano proceeded to follow the guy up the ice and level him to warrant an ejection.

"I think they both just lost their cools. I hope they realize that all they did was hurt the team and we don't need that ... it was totally uncalled for," Battista said.

So without their top two scorers for Saturday's game, and the thought of losing back-to-back games for the first time all season, how would the Icers respond?

They'd have one of their best performances of the season.

The Icers took game two by a score of 4-1 after a spectacular defensive effort.

The Icers killed all 17 of the Wolves' power-play opportunities over the weekend.

Newcomer Keith Jordan, who scored both of the Icers goals on Friday, added one more on Saturday, which turned out to be the eventual game-winner.

Jordan has emerged as one of the best defensemen the Icers have.

"I'm going to nominate him for ACHA rookie of the year," Battista said.

In the midst of a rollercoaster weekend for Battista, he may have found what he's been searching for all season long.

A permanent goaltender.

Quietly, Paul Mammola has been playing well of late.

Mammola had been splitting equal playing time with Chris Matteo throughout the season.

After arguably his best performance of the season when he held Ohio University to one goal in their home rink, Matteo has since struggled a bit.

With Nationals roughly a month away, Battista has given the slight edge to Mammola and started him in both games.

Mammola was solid all weekend, stopping 39 out of 42 shots on Friday and 41 out of 42 on Saturday.

After Friday's game, Battista went back to look at the three goals that Mammola gave up.

He noticed that one trickled in off a skate of an Icer and the other two goals were because of defensive lapses.

"I just made the decision to play him again and he played out of his mind," Battista said.
