"Obviously it feels good to hit," Penn State coach Steve Shephard said. "We didn't count any falls and we were solid all the way around. I was pleased with the team."
Freshman Lindsay Borkan was phenomenal in the victory, achieving season highs in all of the events, and winning the all-around with a score of 39.325. At the end of the meet, she took home the Ann Carr Award for most inspirational performance.
"We practiced every day really hard and finally, at our fourth meet, we put everything together," Borkan said. "We were out there having fun and we were really focused."
Junior Meredith Hoover achieved season highs in the beam and floor events, and finished second in the all-around with a season-high score of 39.100. Senior Kate Stopper tied or topped season highs in every event in which she competed.
The Lions started the meet on the vault, where they swept the top five positions. Borkan, Stopper and senior Lisa Clark all tied for first by scoring a 9.825. Sophomore Amie Olaes set her career high (9.800) to finish fourth, and juniors Hoover and Jennifer Orlando rounded out the top five (9.700).
The bars were strong. Freshman Kristal Uzelac (9.925) took first while recording the second-highest mark in team history in the event. Borkan (9.850) finished second, senior Cécile Allen placed third and junior Michelle Ilg (9.775) finished in sixth.
On the third rotation, the beam, all six Lion gymnasts made their routines. Hoover received first-place honors by scoring 9.875.
She was followed by Uzelac (9.825), Stopper (9.775), Borkan (9.725) and sophomores Corissa Pirkl (9.625) and Genavieve Shingle (9.575).
The Lions finished the competition at the floor exercise, as every Lion gymnast set season highs. Borkan, Clark and Stopper tied for first with scores of 9.925. Hoover and Orlando (9.825) and sophomore Ashley Mehrer (9.800) rounded out the top scores for Penn State.
"We're all happy and having a good time, and that's how its supposed to feel," Stopper said. "This is rewarding because that's the way we practice."
