Letter to the Editor
New Testament must be followed, not Old

This letter is in response to Dan Casper's letter ("Many Bible Chapters Show Scripture Dated," Jan. 28). Mr. Casper, you didn't do you homework well enough. You cite Leviticus and Exodus, but in the same sentence, you identify Christians as those God was giving this law to. This is a misconception and flat out lie. While you do quote some of the most shocking verses from these books, these laws were not aimed at Christians. These laws were given to the Israelites. Christianity didn't come around until hundreds of years later. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus, and was started by his followers. The Pharisees -- the leaders of the Jewish faith -- tested Jesus so many times throughout the Gospels, citing such verses as you did. And every time, he outwitted them by citing other verses of the Old Testament, ones more updated with the times, thereby establishing a base for the new Christian faith. While I do agree with you that some of the laws from Leviticus are extreme, they were meant for the times in which they were given. However, all Christian faiths are based on the teachings of the New Testament.
