Fire breaks out at local condo complex

Alpha Fire Co. responded to a dumpster fire at the Regency Square Condominiums yesterday at about 6 p.m. The flames were put out by 6:10 p.m.

Two residents who lived on the seventh floor at Regency Square, 200 Highland Ave., said they smelled smoke as they went down the elevator and saw the fire when they opened the trash door.

Firefighters said smoke shot up through the trash chute like a chimney.

The residents then called 911 and took a fire extinguisher from their apartment building to help put out the flames.

Mike Klein, Alpha Fire Co. safety officer, said the smoke traveled up through the building.

Klein said the cause of the fire was unknown, and that there was no fire damage to the building and no injuries.
