Members of the service club spent nearly 30 straight hours doing community service activities this past weekend.

For 29 hours this weekend, Penn State's Circle K members sold late night hot dogs, decorated random dorm doors and made cookies for soldiers in Iraq.

It was the fourth annual 29-hour random acts of kindness marathon.

The marathon started Friday at 5 p.m. at State College Area High School, where Circle K members had a "Girls Night Out" with the Hemlock Girl Scout Council.

"... It was really nice to be able to do something for the Girl Scouts, and it felt like we were truly interacting with the community," Circle K member Marg Brennan (sophomore-chemistry) said.

From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., Circle K organized a late-night hot dog sale outside the Student Book Store, 330 E. College Ave., to benefit the Altoona Miracle League, a facility where disabled children can play baseball.

"We got our own grill and our own table and set it up outside ... It was extremely cold outside but we sold about 100 hot dogs," Circle K member Jessica Krum (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said.

The event raised about $120 for charity.

Starting at 2 a.m. Saturday, Circle K members scattered throughout State College, performing random service acts including spending five hours baking 32 dozen cookies for soldiers in Iraq, making "Dancer Mail" for Thon dancers and decorating dorm doors with cheerful greetings.

At the same time, Krum and other Circle K affiliates were making quilts for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the HUB-Robeson Center with Altoona Circle K.

"We made about six or seven quilts to donate to St. Jude," Krum said. "We were all tired, but we knew it was for a good cause, and it all paid off."

Circle K projects co-chair Yajeh Ndimbie (sophomore-psychology) said she loved visiting the Centre Crest Nursing Home and spending time with the residents.

"Centre Crest is one of my favorite places in the world," Ndimbie said. "In the morning we had coffee and shared current events with the residents, and then in the afternoon we played bingo and we bought prices for the winners ... everyone had a lot of fun and the residents are great."

Circle K publicity chair Rico Torres (freshman-energy, business and finance) said his favorite part of the marathon was going to the Second Mile House and sorting through more than 30 bags of toys.

"The kids are going to get some wonderful gifts," Torres said.

"They have summer camps at Penn State and use all the toys that were donated for the camp prizes. I had a fever for half of the marathon, and I still loved it," he added.

All day Saturday, some Circle K members went canning in Lewistown to raise money for the Miracle League.

"I really enjoyed canning on Saturday. Everyone involved is making a difference and you can see all the service we've done is appreciated," Circle K member Rachel Novosel (senior-psychology) said.

Circle K finished off its marathon by helping out with concessions at the Penn State men's basketball game Saturday night.

President Christy Noll (senior-accounting) said being able to help out around the community is a truly rewarding experience.

"I like doing things like this because I get to spend time with different members of Circle K and getting to see how people can help others is really great," she said.
