Columnist's problem shows her prejudice

It takes something really special for the Collegian Opinion page to shock me. I've enjoyed reading some of the interesting columns from all over the political spectrum printed on this page.

But, what I read in the "Meet the Columnists" (Jan. 26) was a real knock out. While The Collegian's editorials generally call for an end to intolerance and blind hatred, one of your columnists put her hatred and intolerance front and center. When asked what the biggest problem facing our generation was, most columnists listed personality traits that are generally unwelcome, but Jen Winberry, without apology maligns an entire group of people by listing "The Right Wing."

Is this a double standard? If she listed African Americans, Jews, Muslims, Asians, Irish Catholics, or almost any other group, she would've quite rightly been run out of the Collegian, but because she attacks "The Right Wing" she's allowed to get away with it.

I think that in the spirit of freedom of speech, political debate is healthy and good for society and the pages of the Collegian. But in light of the fact that the Collegian constantly preaches against the type of mindset that is comfortable with hating a whole group of people, I hope in the future you exercise more care and caution in your selection of columnists.
