'Big game' brings football and food
While New England and Philadelphia are set to face off on Feb. 6, students are planning celebrations.

Fourth and goal. Third and inches. Two great teams.

One incredible game in Jacksonville is set to beam live across the globe.

As Super Bowl Sunday fast approaches, students have begun making preparations for festivities on the big day.

Some Penn State students, like Pilar Akl (junior-sociology), will be hosting Super Bowl parties for their friends and acquaintances.

"I'll make some snacks, get some beer and everyone will bring something," she said.

Akl said she anticipates a guest list of 10 to 15 friends at her West College Avenue apartment to celebrate the big game, and plans to spend about $100 on the event.

"I love throwing parties, for the atmosphere, and the Super Bowl is the perfect occasion," she said.

Akl added that the true scope of the event includes more than just the plays and points of the game itself.

"It really is a special day that goes beyond football. It's a fun experience to share with good friends," she said. "It really doesn't matter too much who wins or loses, as long as everyone gets together and has a good time."

Other students said they would visit downtown businesses to watch the big game.

During last year's Super Bowl, the Sports Café, 244 W. College Ave., was packed with students watching the game, said Sports Café Manager Nick Bisceglia.

"We had well over 200 people in here. It was standing room only, and we're expecting even more this year because so many Eagles fans will be out," he said.

Bisceglia added that the Sports Café will add extra staff on Sunday to handle the rush.

"I come here even when I'm not working to watch games. With everyone shouting and cheering, it's almost like being at the game," he said.

Other students said they would be watching the Super Bowl on the projection TV at the Abba Java House, 256 E. College Ave., in St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

"We wanted to provide a non-alcoholic alternative," said Rev. Tyson Ferguson, director of college ministries for the Wesley Student Center, which operates the coffee house.

Free snacks and coffee will be provided to several church youth groups from around the Centre region, and the public is invited to attend, Ferguson said.

"We expect about 150 people to come. We hope for a great turnout and great fun," Ferguson said.

Chris Winslow, co-owner of Smoke-N-Joes, 128 Locust Lane, said he expects a high turnout of students to watch the game Sunday.

The café's big screen television and enthusiastic fans make Smoke-N-Joe's a fun place to watch football most Sundays of the season, Winslow said.

"The fans who come in to watch football are the reason I actually like working weekends," Winslow said.

Some Philadelphia natives, like James Bachich (sophomore-criminal justice), will be making a pilgrimage back to the City of Brotherly Love to enjoy the game.

"This is the biggest thing to happen to Philly in years," Bachich said. "It'll be nuts. If we win people will just party and party."

Justin Bukartek, a vocal New England Patriots fan, said that if he had the disposable income, he would fly to Jacksonville to tailgate.

"Football is such a competitive sport," Bukartek said. "Sharing the competition with other fans makes the game so much more exciting. It's cool to have someone to yell with you or, sometimes, at you."
