Monday, I was over at Rec Hall getting ready to go for a mid-day run. All of the sudden, girls from the Women's Soccer Team started making an appearance until over 20 girls showed up along with the coaches and trainers.
Before I knew it I saw the coaches telling runners who were in the middle of a workout to "clear the track" since it was going to be closed for 30 minutes. None of the "non-athletes" who were running on the track knew of this closure for the athletes to use it in the afternoon.
I'm not against athletes being rewarded with their own weight rooms, getting awesome apparel, and even scholarships to come here. However, I do think it's wrong for them to have the privilege to all of the sudden close a public facility for the people of State College to use. At least give us a heads up of when the track is needed. I might be wrong, but don't the nice athletic weight rooms have treadmills?
I know it is hard to believe but some of us "normal" students who attend this university have exercise needs and our time is very valuable just like the athletes' time. I wish the women's soccer team good luck this year; this opinion was nothing against them or any student athlete, as I'm a huge supporter of all Nittany Lion sports. I just ask the coaches and trainers involved to think of the other "normal Nittany Lions here at Penn State" since us "normal people" support and cheer on your athletic squads day in and day out.
