Tsunami benefit
Concert to offer relief to victims

Collegian Staff Writer

The Crowbar is jumping on the bandwagon -- in a good way, that is.

Crowbar, 420, E. College Ave., will soon join the multitude of groups taking time out to do their part for the tsunami victims of southeast Asia.

On Monday night at 8, Crowbar is holding an all-ages Tsunami Relief Benefit.

For a donation of $5 or more you can enjoy this special event chock full of live music and low drink prices and also know that your donation is going to a worthy cause.

Prices will be half off everything from 8 to 10 p.m. and there will also be a $5 Miller Lite pitcher special from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Brian Bumbarger, a faculty researcher in Penn State's Prevention Research Center in the College of Health and Human Development, organized the benefit.

"My main goal is just to raise money to support the relief effort, but I think a secondary benefit might be to remind people how much the local music community really does to support people in need and local and national charities," Bumbarger said.

The money the benefit raises will go to help build and run orphanages in Tamil Nadu, one of the hardest hit coastal areas in India.

"I worry that much of the worldwide relief effort we're seeing now will go a long way to meet the immediate needs such as food, water and medicine," Bumbarger said.

"But the longer term needs of the victims, especially the children, won't be met once the current wave of concern and philanthropy ends," he added.

Bumbarger also said that he has never put together a charity event like this by himself but the all ages benefit concert was organized with the community in mind.

"I wanted to contribute something to the relief effort, but I didn't feel what I could contribute on my own would make much difference, given the amount of need, so I decided to try to pull something together that the whole community could contribute to," he said.

The bands scheduled to play the benefit will be Poptart Monkeys, Backstreet Law, Body & Soul and The Nightcrawlers.

"We try to get out there," Chrissy Miller, lead singer for Body & Soul, said.

"If we can use our talent to raise money, well why not? We all try not to take life for granted and living here in Happy Valley we have it pretty safe. We seem sheltered a bit here," Miller added.

Miller said that the band is excited to play for the college crowd.

"We are very proud and excited to be playing where all the action is," she said. "The college kids have been great so far."

The Poptart Monkeys, who will go on stage at about 12:30 a.m., are also eager to help out when it comes to the charity event.

"We are looking forward to doing our part to hopefully make somebody's life a little better over in the devastated countries that were crushed by the disaster," band publicist Fletcher Townsend, said.
