Ignorance must be fought on rape issue
This letter is in response to Patrick Gibbons ("Feminist Tactics Use Fear to Move Agenda," Jan. 20). I, like Jessica Petriello, am also a volunteer at the Women's Resource Center. I am a proud feminist, or as Patrick so intelligently put it, a nut case. I would be interested in hearing where your opinion of feminists comes from. Since the feminist movement came about in order to create a more equal society for women, I am unsure how you could write such an obviously false statement. I believe that it is attitudes like this that make issues like rape and sexual assault such a big problem. Working at the center and going through the training, I have seen first hand how much of a problem these issues continue to be. It is ignorance that keeps the defacement of women alive and well. I think it might be time for you to take your dictionary out and look up the word rape. These survivors of rape and sexual assault were not given the choice. If you were knowledgeable about these issues like you should be, you would know that the statistics you heard about are true. Rape and sexual assault are extremely serious issues. I think the real issue is not the "feminist agenda," it is the ignorance of those who still continue to blame women for rape. Sarah Buonarota
