The dream is over.
The dream of having black and gold, green and white meet in the warm climate of Jacksonville crashed and burned Sunday as the Steelers found themselves on the wrong end of the final score.
The cheers and jeers echoed through Beaver Canyon as Eagles fans celebrated their long-awaited victory, while the chants of Steelers fans could only be heard as echoes from weeks past.
In a time when Penn State football has only been met with disappointment, students are forced to live out their dreams of a winning team through the NFL. However, those rooting for the Steelers have run into the dreaded Nittany Lion's wall, and have lost that dream.
Remember Eagles fans, for the past three years you have met with disappointment and you know the feeling of a devastating loss. Now turn toward your fellow students, the Steelers fans, and know that they too are going through that same loss. Eagles and Steelers fans have heckled each other for years, and will continue to do so for years to come.
But this is a mourning period for the Steelers. This is a period in which the fans are more concerned with getting over their loss than being harassed by fans who have gotten what they believe they deserve.
Be aware, Eagles fans, that you will find your Steelers counterparts defending themselves by all means necessary. They will remind you of their regular season victory over you, as well as the Patriots.
And as for you Steelers fans in mourning: Remember how wonderful it would be for you to be saying what Eagles fans can finally proclaim.
It's about time.
After 24 excruciating years of defeat, the road to the Super bowl has found its way back through Philadelphia.
It's a shame for you, Steelers fans, because an all-Pennsylvania Super bowl would have been nice, but Eagles fans can't complain.
They are sorry your team couldn't quite figure out how to beat the Patriots. But it's not their fault Ben didn't pan out the way you all had hoped. But empathy can't be apathy, especially for a Philly sports fan.
Philadelphia fans have endured so much suffering in their history, more than four Super-Bowled Steelers fans could ever understand. In Philadelphia, even the "best" is never quite good enough.
Many at Penn State were not even born the last time Philly won a major sports championship. Hope for the city was even pinned on a horse this summer. It is that bad.
So Steelers fans, be nice to those jubilant Eagles fans. Success comes less often for them. Let them enjoy it.
