Four Penn State students were arrested Sunday and held at Centre County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bail, following an altercation that State College Police said may have been related to a football rivalry.
State College Police said that John Costa, 20, William Devine, 21, Ryan Maloney, 22, and William Connell, 20, were all charged with felony criminal trespassing and arraigned Sunday before District Justice Daniel Hoffman. All four were released from Centre County Prison yesterday afternoon.
One of the victims reported to police that the four suspects allegedly entered an apartment at O'Brien Place, 300 S. Pugh St., at about 8:45 p.m. and began fighting with several people inside the apartment, State College Police Sgt. Mark Argiro said. He added that the incident was alcohol related and the injuries resulting from the incident were minor.
All four suspects were wearing Philadelphia Eagles jerseys, Argiro said.
Devine told police the incident began when an argument ensued between him and people inside the apartment, while he was standing outside the building. Devine also said that an unknown male struck him with a beer can from the apartment window.
Devine told police he threw a beer can, which broke an apartment window, and then left to get the other suspects, Argiro said. All four suspects then went up to the apartment.
Argiro said the four suspects were gone when officers arrived at the apartment but were found on another floor of the building.
An officer smelled burning marijuana, which led to Devine being charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, Argiro said.
Devine, who entered the closed apartment first, is also charged with burglary, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. Connell is also charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment, underage drinking and possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition to criminal trespassing, Costa is charged with underage drinking, and Maloney is charged with disorderly conduct.
Preliminary hearings for the four suspects will be held tomorrow at Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
