Sub-par competition no challenge for PSU
Fencing

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State Duals on Saturday did not live up to the name. It was as if Penn State was competing and the other teams were just sitting and watching.

The Penn State fencing team dominated its competition -- Duke, Drew and Haverford -- in the snow-covered White Building.

The competition, fencers said, was not up to par. But the Lions did not let that affect their performance.

"The fact is that we were playing kind of easier teams than usual," sophomore Tamara Najm said. "But we didn't just brush them off, and we won."

The men's team won its matches 20-7 (Duke), 22-5 (Haverford), and 17-10 (Drew).

Najm helped to contribute to the women's perfect record in the foil against Duke, 9-0.

The women's foil squad dominated against all three teams, with seniors Meredith Chin and Rachel Smith, junior Annekathrin Donath and freshman Sara Gonzalez contributing.

The women's team won its matches 22-5 (Drew), 24-3 (Haverford), and 19-8 (Duke).

"We all worked hard and supported each other throughout," Najm said.

The Lions refused to let the easier competition get to their heads and took each match as seriously as they would a national title match.

"Most teams just are not up to our abilities, but we have to go up against them like they are," Najm said.

In a women's epee match against Drew, sophomore Case Szarwark let the entire crowd know she won by letting out a loud yell in celebration after earning the deciding point.

Junior Chris Miller would scream after each point as if he won a national championship, even though he took only a 1-0 lead.

In the men's epee, freshman Arthur Urman is the exact opposite of Szarwark and Miller -- he will just nod and walk away after each point, as if nothing happened.

The team is filled with different personalities but it has one goal in mind: winning.

Despite an upset loss to Haverford in the men's epee, the team as a whole banded together and won every other event.
