Issue, not advocates, should be addressed
Mr. Gibbons' obnoxious and polemic statements in his letter on Thursday ("Feminist Tactics Use Fear to Move Agenda," Jan. 20) are absurd and completely unfounded. Ms. Wood and "feminist nutcases" like us were outraged by the misrepresentation of sexual assault in the Collegian's article on Tuesday, not at the idea that there was a decrease in the number of assaults. Sexual violence is not solely a feminist issue -- it affects all members of the community. Clearly, Mr. Gibbons is simply appropriating the issue of sexual violence to promote his own anti-feminist agenda. Were Mr. Gibbons truly concerned with women and the crimes committed against them, he would have addressed the issue itself and not its advocates. The statistics put forth by Ms. Wood are nationally recognized and considered valid by numerous government and nongovernmental agencies. Sexual assault, according to Pennsylvania state law, is defined as sex without consent. Sadly, there are women raised in our culture who are unaware of their rights of consent, thereby preventing them from saying no when faced with an unwanted sexual situation. Perhaps Mr. Gibbons feels threatened by feminist efforts to educate women of their rights. If Mr. Gibbons so firmly believes that women can make decisions on their own, why has he taken it upon himself to speak for all women? In closing, we are glad to see that Mr. Gibbons, as a graduate, still has enough free time to read and contribute to the Daily Collegian and its insightful political commentary.
