New England fans celebrate victory
Although the majority of people were rooting for either the Steelers or the Eagles, some students were cheering for the Patriots.

While the much-hyped Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl will not happen, some Patriots fans are ecstatic and don't want to be left out of the excitement.

Leanne Gottschalk (junior-hotel, restaurant and institutional management) is from Boston and has a few problems with Eagles fans and their E-A-G-L-E-S chant.

"The Eagles chant is really annoying -- it's actually obnoxious," she said. "It's fine to support your team but you don't have to be so annoying."

Gottschalk was one of the few people who was not rooting for the two Pennsylvania teams to make it.

Gottschalk's roommate, Nicole Fournier (junior-crime, law and justice and sociology), also a Patriots fan, said she is usually with Gottschalk when people start chanting.

"Leanne starts screaming at them, so my first reaction is to stop her before she gets into a fight," Fournier said.

Gottschalk, dressed in full Patriots garb, went to Pittsburgh for the game against the Patriots yesterday and said that while she got a snowball thrown at her by some Steelers fans, in the end, she got the last laugh.

"We played wonderfully," Gottschalk said. "I think Ben [Roethlisberger] choked."

Gottschalk was accompanied on her trip to the game by her friend Kristen Mikelonis (senior-hotel, restaurant and institutional management).

Gottschalk said Mikelonis, a Steelers fan, was silent after the game.

Mikelonis, like many other students, was looking for an Eagles and Steelers, all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl.

Ironically, Gottschalk's apartment is divided between Eagles fans and Patriots fans.

"Two of us are Pats fans and two are Eagles fans," she said, "so, we'll definitely be having a party."

Fournier said she was nervous at first during the game, but became excited with the win.

"We've been to the Super Bowl twice in recent years, so we don't have to deal with the pressure," she said.

Meanwhile, the Eagles will be making their first trip since 1981.

While Gottschalk may not have any chants to counter E-A-G-L-E-S, she will be cheering for the Patriots all the way.

"Of course the Pats can win," Gottschalk said. "They've won it in the past, so they can do it again."
