Coming into a Penn State sports program is tough enough, but joining a team that is one of the elite squads in the country as a freshman can seem almost impossible. When the 11 senior members of the No. 14 Penn State women's swimming and diving team committed to compete for the Nittany Lions squad, they were probably aware of the cardiovascular demands characteristic of a swimming season. Team USA has historically been known as a pushover, playing for last place in each of the last two World University Games. Beginning with tomorrow's 13-event meet against Rutgers, the Penn State men's swimming and diving team will enter its final stretch of the regular season before the Big Ten Championships arrive in late February. After an extended holiday break, the Penn State Lady Icers are returning to the ice and looking to improve on their up-and-down first half of the season. Hard work pays off in championships and recognition, and if you're part of the Penn State men's gymnastics team, this weekend you will finally receive both. The team's national championship banner from last April will be hung in Rec Hall to signal the start of the Nittany Lions' home competition. The women's gymnastics team got only two days of practice this week before it left for Michigan yesterday. So far the No. 21 Penn State wrestling team has grappled with an unfamiliar fact. Penn State University will be the host of the 2007 NCAA Championships, which will be held on April 12-14, 2007, as announced yesterday in a press conference on campus. The 2007 championships will mark the seventh time in school history that the Nittany Lions have hosted the NCAA championships for men's gymnastics. The last time Penn State hosted the NCAA men's gymnastics championships was in 1998. Things have never been simple when it comes to Penn State's man without a position. This Sunday, the road to the Super Bowl goes through Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, plowing straight down the middle of State College along the way. What was supposed to be a physical matchup between two conference rivals ended up leaving one team with bruises splattered all over its pride. In the spring of 1980, Joe Paterno had a problem. It wasn't that his football team had just finished a ho-hum season with a mediocre win over a mediocre Tulane team in the mediocre Liberty Bowl. Not just the Penn State football coach, Paterno was also the athletic director, and was placing ads in the classifieds. Confidence is often hard to regain once it has been shaken. If it were in a box, it would be labeled "fragile." After beating No. 1 Rhode Island at home last Saturday, Icers coach Joe Battista felt his team may have become somewhat complacent when a substantial amount of his players arrived late to the first practice following that emotional win. Forgive the Penn State men's volleyball team if it doesn't show the same enthusiasm for traveling to scenic Muncie and Fort Wayne, Ind., this weekend as it did two weeks ago when jetting to Hawaii for the Outrigger Invitational Tournament. Allen Street Grill, 100 W. College Ave., will feature Bill Filer and Troeginator beer (231-4745). A movie like In Good Company can be rather difficult to watch, yet it is almost essential for the American public to do so. After a torrent of glowing reviews and an impressive showing at Sunday's Golden Globes, The Aviator appears poised to soar to the head of the Oscar race (no pun intended). So, I figured I'd weigh in on whether or not the high-flying epic (last one, I swear) is worth your time and money. My mom suggested I read Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner over winter break. I ordered the Fiery Furnaces' new EP online, like, forever ago, and it only just arrived in time to give it a spin and pop out a quickie review before the paper hit the press. Previews are usually awfully indicative of what the upcoming feature's going to be all about. If Kill Bill: Vol. 1's shining audio star was the 5.6.7.8's loopy surf-rock ditty "Woo Hoo," then Vol. 2's is Shivaree's sultry "Goodnight Moon." |
