People like Patrick Gibbons ("Feminist Tactics Use Fear to Move Agenda," Jan. 20) are why I continue to claim feminism. I don't blame you for your ignorance; you are, unfortunately, a product of the myths and misconceptions present in our society. What, exactly, do you have against trying to eliminate sexual assaults on our campus -- regardless of the different opinions surrounding the frequency of occurrence? In order to achieve this goal, we all must be aware of the truths behind the issue. I would ask you to gather 10 of your female friends or family members and ask how many of them have been sexually assaulted, i.e. had physical advances made without their consent.
I think what you find will greatly alter your perception of this issue. And I hope you get angry about it just as those "nutcase feminists" have. We as a society DO have a right to be scared and angry about sexual violence that occurs in our society against both women and men.
Rape is an issue that directly affects you, and fortunately you can and are invited to be part of the solution. As far as your comments regarding the feminist motivations of spreading fear and anger: It is obvious that you have played into stereotypes and are not informed or knowledgeable about the feminist movement. I am truly sorry that you were able to pass through the doors of our university without ever learning the truth about feminist ideals and philosophies. I encourage you to do your own research in the future before blindly accepting and employing such outdated stereotypes and images.
