Ignoring rape problem makes issues worse

It is important to note that sexual assault, rape, and other forms of sexual violence are not a women's issue or a "feminist issue" ("Feminist Tactics Use Fear to Move Agenda," Jan. 20). These various forms of violence are societal issues that are everyone's problem. By failing to admit that there is a problem, we are doing ourselves and society at large a tremendous injustice.

Publishing uninformed articles and making uninformed assumptions only leads to the hostile environment that is unfriendly to all of us. Every time someone like Mr. Gibbons sounds off and makes sexual violence seem unimportant, it makes it harder for victims to come forward or go to the police.

We are all part of this world. We could all potentially be - or are - victims, survivors, or perpetrators of violence. What if it was your sibling, your parent, your significant other, your best friend, or YOU that was raped or sexually assaulted? Would you still feel that this problem does not exist?
