Groups shouldn't get USG Senate money

The Undergraduate Student Government endures its continuing quest for irrelevance with the latest news that the Senate has already run out of funds used to fund campus student groups. Believe it or not, fellow students, there was once a time when the Senate was not responsible for such things, and actually had time to focus on more salient initiatives, like lowering tuition.

However, 16 senators single- handedly changed purpose of the legislative body in the spring of 2002 by approving the funding of a student group. Those senators, all members of the College Republicans, approved the funds necessary for them to take a vacation to a networking conference in Washington, D.C.

Their folly established a dangerous precedent that has now led to this current situation, where students use the Senate as a monetary solution before attempting to use the proper channel for student group funds, UPAC.

I hope that, since the damage has now been done, the current senators will see the error in their ways and in this misguided precedent, and look to seal the well for the betterment of student governing at Penn State.
