A winter storm is expected to bring at least five inches of snow to State College this weekend, the most the area has seen this winter.

In anticipation of the storm, the canning trips to benefit the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (Thon) have been rescheduled for next weekend.

Penn State meteorologist Geoff Cornish said the storm would develop around midday Saturday and continue through the night, tapering off Sunday morning.

Thon Overall Chair Seth Moser said because the canning trip has been postponed, the deadline for dancer registration will also be pushed back a week.

"The Thon overall committee did not want to be responsible for sending people out in horrible weather," he said.

Travis Hoffman, vice president of the Student Red Cross Club, said the group was planning on canning in Greenville and was disappointed to hear that the canning trip was canceled.

"This could effect the amount of money we raise because we were going to can outside of Wal-Mart," he said. "We had to request that space months in advance."

Alpha Kappa Psi Thon co-chair Jen Schwartz (senior-supply chain and information systems) said she was not surprised when she heard the canning weekend was canceled.

"It's happened other times in years past, and safety is the most important thing," she said. "We will probably make more money next weekend than if we had to stand outside this weekend in a blizzard."

No Refund Theatre (NRT) was planning on canning in Dover and then staying over at their Thon child's house.

"My only concern was making enough money in time, but now that the deadline is moved back, I'm sure we will be fine," NRT Thon Co-Chair Jessica Kozma said. "If it was bad weather, our canning could suffer because people wouldn't be going outside."

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District Two maintenance manager Ron Chubb said PennDOT has been successfully coping with snowfall so far this winter, and this weekend's storm is expected to be no different.

Chubb said because of the storm, an unusually full shift of 39 drivers with snowplows will be ready to work overtime to clear roads this weekend.

PennDOT spokeswoman Marla Fannin said interstates are given top priority for snow removal, followed by high traffic state routes and low traffic state routes.

"[Individual counties] will be making plans, depending on the weather in their area," she said.

Office of Physical Plant (OPP) spokesman Paul Ruskin said a midnight clear is in effect from midnight Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. He also said three crews will help clear the campus.

"Whatever Old Man Winter throws our way, OPP will be ready for it," Ruskin said.
